Final piece evaluation

The original intentions of the production was similar to the final product but the only problem we had was with the quality of shots as the lighting wasn't the best.
However it did do its job in terms on providing an insight on the book to the audience, the engages the audience through the suspense of the books content via how it was being introduced.
The focus group feedback gave me A lot of good criticism, the main thing said was the transition between each shot wasn't smooth enough, this was because of the quality of the production, we only had one camera therefore we had to move it according each time we had to use a close up. However with that being said we still need to edit our production therefore doing so will enable it to be more smooth.
The technical features such as lighting was mere at a pass this was because the location we filmed at did not have enough lighting and our equipment did not provide us with the substantial amount of lighting required therefore we plan to change this by adding filters when editing.
Aside from the criticism we had many positive comments stating the fact that we portrayed the book review show as something that would be seen professionally on a Saturday morning tv show.
As for the lighting we didn't have any equipment so we had to use natural light, the footage turned out to be quite yellow. The camera shots were on point, we showed many different angles but we did not include a extreme close up of the book, however we substituted this with a online image.

SCRIPT
This is the script i will be using for my book review show:
Host: Welcome to the Saturday morning 4-chan book club, todays book has sold over 3million copies worldwide in only a few months, Kafka on shore by Haruki murakami, its a comtempery fiction novel about a boy who runs away from home at the age of 15, it is written in two first person characters taking their personality and atmosphere.
I'm joined today by a special guest,Murakami herself, let me congratulate you on your success, perhaps could give us an insight on what passes for the plot
Marcelo: thank you, as for the plot it it follows two protagonists, kafka and nakata who are both share the same fate, both going about their daily routines
Host: As for the chapters it jumps into different times and places could you tell us why you decided to do things this way
Marcelo: i wanted the book to have its relation to the spiritual world itself being having the audience solve the puzzle and fit pieces together, it seemed a little messy at first but i decided to go with it as the structure soldidates itself during the middle and towards the end.
Host: Why did you choose the lost forrest as the main stage for your story?
Marcelo: the idea of it being a forrest allows me to picture what exactly will be going on, it gives the the idea of trancending to another realm. for example the part where kafka goes to the underworld
I completely agree, what about the characters, i espically intruguied by Kafkas backstory, what gave you the inspiration for each of the different unique characters?
Funny thing is all of the characters were part of my draft expect for Kafka which i came up last with, i starting building a foundation of it and ever since he became the main protagonist.
HOST Some in the entertainment industry wants to use your book and turn it into a movie, what are your thoughts on this?
I have no problems against it, in fact its a fantastic idea, with it being a film i want it to be soley reflected as a film and be its own distinct thing. As for the characters i would want to use with probably be Dylan minnitee from goosebumps.

production process
From these shows the inspiration i gained from it helped me prep my own in ways such as how the host engages with the guest through how they pause to let the author talk about it instead of the host just talking. The camera angles used it the book show ABC book club allowed me to do something similar into placing the spotlight onto the author.
During rehearsal there wasn't much difficultly involved as the majority of the content was in the text itself such as what the host would say and how the author would respond, for this i've already had a script therefore it was simple by just following the lines on what to say. However with that being said we also had to practice various verbal/non -verbal gestures such using hand gestures when expressing certain words and such. In addition to this the camera angles we planned on using allowed us to throughly think through the process during rehearsal, this gave us extra ideas and really put us on the spot when it came to showing perfect angles when the author and host are communicating with each other.
Our time management during our production was so-so as we filmed a segment of the book show and left it as it is and continued another time, this effected a bit of the quality of the production but it gave us an opportunity to think about how we are to approach it differently to make it better during our off-production period. The teamwork we had in my group was good as we had to rely on each other to move the camera in turns so we get the optimal close up angle for each shot.

Production log week 1
During this week the main focus was choosing which type of production i were to go with, the class was split between news packages and some choose cooking shows. I looked into a similar at first, a 'smoothie maker machine', this idea was refreshing
i looked into the different book review shows out there
i decided to settle with a book review show.

during the first week i've researched into what type of TV show i'll be doing and decided to go with a Book review show, i've choose this role because it allows me to in depth talk about a particular thing, which allows me to be versatile in how i present and introduce the book itself.
During this week i also filmed my short pitch proposal and got feedback.

Presentation proposal
Presentation proposal
Role: i'll be the person talking about the book and with a guest.
Genre: Review show ( Book review )
Target Audience: TBA depending on genre of book, 10-26
Set: In a modest location such as a house with a sofa.
People involved: Me and another person.
http://www.uefap.com/writing/genre/bookrev.htm
A book review of me and a guest being my friend who i'll be discussing the contents of a chosen book. We'll be starting of with formal introductions and will be talking about first impressions,
background of the book, content, evaluation then a conclusion.
I have chosen this role because it allows me to be versatile in how i introduce a book and it works allows me to work on my presentation and verbal skills.
The possible problems i might encounter could be technical such as misplace of camera and moving out of shot now and then, this is because the camera needs to be set in place before the show starts.
The other potential problems that may occur could do with verbal imbalances or brief pauses leading to un-fluent presentation.
The visual techniques i'll be using is body language
The TV Book Club - Elizabeth Haynes
During the first introduction of the book review it jumps straight into the main character and describing the traits and characteristics of the character, this may be because of the violent connotations of the book leading to a more serious attitude towards it.
The tone of voice for this book review of the host is engaged and the guests who've read the book is also engaged while intently listening to what she has to say. Occasionally her tone of voice differs such raising her voice this is because of her enthusiastic attitude and slight anger towards a part of a story to emphasise how it is important it is.
Visual techniques: Hand gestures are used throughout when both author and host is communicating their ideas to each other. Certain guests have the posture adjusted forward and hands on their kneecaps, this shows that they are engaged.
ABC - The book club
The tone of voice of the male guest is slow and mellow yet informative, sentence structure is very organised however occasional interruptions between the speech by other guests shows that they are all engaged in giving their own opinions.
The females tone of voice is very enthusiastic with using visual techniques such as holding the book and kissing the book (2.10), this shows that she expressing her feelings by how the book has impacted her.
Illustrative language is a lot in this clip to show us what certain genres and mood the book implies with and gives us a general idea what the book is about.
Throughout the video all of the guests used hand gestures from showing how big something was to illustrating a chronological timeline targeting teenagers from one end to elders in the far end, this gives the audience a general idea, and because it is a book review it makes it seem friendly, easy to listen to and a open discussion.
C Span
http://www.c-span.org/video/?408914-1/juan-thompson-discusses-stories-tellThis book review show is more serious compared to the others, there is a host who will be talking directly to the audience with a formal tone of voice alongside the author of the book who is answering of discussing questions in a modest fashion,
The first snippet of the clip contains the author reading out selected chapters of the book to give the audience an idea, his tone is voice is deep, informative and he makes the right pauses in between sentences. After this the host begins to talk reflecting on what he has heard, his tone of voice sounded more heightened showing signs of engagement and inspiration, his pace of delivery is a little bit faster at this point, this is because he wanted to share his honest opinions.
After this stage the host and the author begin to discuss about the tragic events that took place and the historical factors behind his work, the tone of voice is more serious and pace of delivery is much slower to allow the live audience to take in what is said.
As for the visual techniques, hand gestures are used but not used as much as the other clips, hand gestures were only used to describe a time period and a overall idea and is mostly used by the host himself. Whereas the author is seated in a more enclosed position having his hands in his lap.
Back up ideas
Chat Show
A chat show is my one of two backup idea since it follows the same format as a book review, instead of talking about a book i could talk about celebrity gossip, current news and etc which widens the different potential possibilities.
My chat show would be a discussion of a celebrities upcoming album and i'll be asking questions on her/his journey to get to where he is today. However this idea seems pretty generic so if i were to do this type of chat show i'd add a twist to it to make it more appealing to the audience.
Conclusion
In conclusion i've researched into different book review shows and each one is presented differently based on guests the genre of the book and the respected author therefore this gave me an rough idea on how i should present my Book review show in the future. If i decide to change from a Book show these examples give me similar idea for a chat show.
From these shows the inspiration i gained from it helped me prep my own in ways such as how the host engages with the guest through how they pause to let the author talk about it instead of the host just talking. The camera angles used it the book show ABC book club allowed me to do something similar into placing the spotlight onto the author.

The teamwork we had in my group was good as we had to

Presentation roles and techniques
Documentary Presenter:
In this documentary presented by Stacey Dooley, we follow her on a journey where she intervenes and investigates the extreme muslim influences and how they have taken over her hometown, the context of most her documentary involves exposing of some type and giving her opinions upon the matter and being firsthand involved in the subject herself. From viewing this documentary start to end a lot of verbal techniques are used from the sentence structure to the tone of voice, however during different parts of the documentary these change such as when she is confronting a muslim extremist (9.15) her tone of voice changes with a sense of anger lingering underneath this shows that she wants to get her points across and is involved in the action instead of just being on the sidelines
this allows the audience to be entertained, however she maintains a illustrative language throughout alongside visual techniques such as physical gestures and body language to allow the audience to understand how she feels towards the subject.
Game show host:
Family Feud is a game show targeting families and people of all ages, the goal of the game is for both participating families to guess the popular answers of a survey in order to win cash and prizes, family feud has been ongoing since the 1970's and a change of hosts has been in place but the show still shares the same connotations of humour and entertainment throughout, because of this the host has to be very clever in terms of showing different attitudes and verbal techniques to entertain the audiences, a verbal technique i'll be naming of is the use of quotations, sometimes the host which in this case Steven Harvey, quotes something a participant has said and repeats it in a slow fashion alongside visual techniques such as facial expressions, the result of this allows the audience to interpret it differently in ways such as realising that it may of sounded sexual or making fun of what the participants had let out their mouths being something silly, because of this it allows the show to become unique in its own humorous agenda.
News presenter
News presenters are often very serious when presenting the news, they maintain good posture and announcing the news baring in mind the use of language and phrasing structures. A example i'll be using is of BBC news 'The world Today', the news presenter throughout maintains a consistency of her tone of voice, it remains calm and self-justified in a manner where we can hear and understand her clearly. In addition to this her pace of delivery is smooth and timbre fulfilling the details of a certain news then smoothly moving on to another. Visual techniques i've noticed are that her dress and appearance is smart wearing a black blazer and little to no make-up, her body language is kept formal maintaining good posture and her position in her seat is glued. Her movement in terms of facial expressions are kept to a minimum showing a neutral expression, also her physical gestures are rarely seen with the exception of frequently quotation signs however during the part when the news presenter at the studio was interviewing someone she used a couple of hand gestures to get across her points.
DJ
There are different DJs at different radio stations and each DJ has its own type of audience, for example a Hip-hop urban DJ will be using more slang to appeal to their audiences making them understand and relate to them better whereas a radio station targeting older adults will be more light-hearted and more serious compared to the other. A example i'll be using of is the DJ for capital One Extra TimwestwoodTV, the first verbal technique i'll be talking about is appropriate to audience, from the way he talks and the content he talks about is very important for example audiences might not want to hear about what is going with the gardening club but they will prefer to hear about celebrity gossip within the music industry such as the beef between Nick cannon and Eminem.
Magazine programme presenter
A magazine programme is usually broadcast during the day, it targets a wide range of audiences with the exception of Loose woman which most targets woman and their lifestyle/issues. A magazine presenter hosts this type of show with each episode coming anew with daily big topics to talk about, common verbal techniques used are appropriate to audience, in this case i'll be using the example of Loose Woman, the content usually involves issues regarding relationships, celebrity gossip and other things that appeal to the audience of housewives. Another verbal technique used is Use of quotations, as a lot of times seen in the show, the host references something a particular person has said such as a a celebrity or a politician therefore this allows them to discuss on the topic and audiences at home can also interact. Verbal techniques used is dress and appearance as casual, wearing leggings crop tops and physical gestures are used to communicate to each other and the audience in a friendly way.
Continuity announcer
A continuity announcer is the voice who announces what programmes are next, they can be either male or female, the verbal techniques generally used are pace of delivery, their speech has to be fluent and usually said in a not slow not fast fashion where the audience can understand exactly what programme is going to come on next. Another verbal technique used is breadth of vocabulary, the continuity announcer has to pronounce the vocabulary in a way that the audience can easily understand. As for visual techniques there isn't one because you can only hear the voice of a continuity announcer.
Chat Show
A chat show is a show that invites celebrities and guests on stage to interview or talk about a particular topic, for this example i've choose Adele on Jimmy Fallon, a verbal technique used is consistency, in the majority of Jimmy Fallon shows, a lot humour is show and as for the goofy challenges that entertain the audience, because of this those who watch Jimmy Fallon no what to expect when a celebrity comes on the show, these celebrities participate in colourful challenges and the host talks to them as if they are very friendly. Another verbal technique used is Tone of voice, his tone of voice in this particular clip changes a lot, this is because he tried to do a high pitched British accent, this also shows that his show is very versatile and friendly and funny for audiences to watch. During their interaction physical gestures are used, we see this in most of Jimmy Fallon's interviews, he does this to make the person being interviewed speak as if they are friends to as if imply that they can express true opinions more freely therefore giving exclusive insight to the audiences standing out from other chat shows. Facial expressions is also widely used in Jimmy Fallon's chat shows, this is because the facial expressions he and his guests make are to entertain the audiences and are used freely as such.
Lifestyle Programme presenter
A lifestyle programme presenter can be represented differently regarding what programme it is, a example i'll be taking out of is Come dine with me. If those familiar with the show know that the presenter is often very sarcastic, using verbal techniques such as Tone of voice, the presenters tone of voice is usually high, giddy and joking, along with breadth of vocabulary, some words are pronounced with a twist to imply a humorous side to the content. The context of the show is cooking and it targets ages of 16-30 due of its targeted humour. The presenter of this show is the narrator therefore there isn't any visual techniques used.
Broadcast Journalist
A broadcast journalist is portrayed as intelligent and knowledgable and usually knows what they are talking about, the way they talk is similar to of a news presenter certain facial expressions are used only at the right time if not they are not used at all and they are usually looking straight into the camera with exceptions of interviews, example i'll be using is of is a young lady who is presenting news on the aircraft solar impulse, she remains a consistent tone of voice and pace of delivery allowing a clear understand to the audience, Illustrative language is used as seen in the clip where she is accurate and consistent in what she is talking about. Visual techniques such as hand gestures are often used to illustrate and follow up what she is saying, her body language remains neutral during her speech towards the audience, as when she is in the aircraft her body language shows us that she is excited to try out the new plane.
The location of the Broadcast Journalist is located 'outside' to that they
